The Oke Oba Eruwa Development Union (OOEDU) today, Saturday, August 2nd, 2025, presented a cash gift and announced a new welfare fund appeal for Mr. Azeez Adebisi Abayomi, a spinal cord accident victim, while also revealing plans to establish a permanent Welfare Trust Fund. The ceremony, held at the L. A. Primary School Library in Oke Oba, Eruwa, was a testament to the community’s commitment to the Yoruba omoluabi ethos.
According to an address delivered by Prince Julius O. Binuyo, the Coordinator of OOEDU, the event was the result of a successful fundraising campaign organized earlier this year. It brought together numerous prominent personalities and community members to show support for Mr. Adebisi Abayomi, whose promising career was tragically cut short 13 years ago due to a spinal cord injury. Prince Binuyo acknowledged the crucial role of a blogger, known as “The Village Girl,” whose publications brought Mr. Adebisi’s plight to the attention of the union. He expressed gratitude, stating, “The crux is that the leadership of Oke Oba Eruwa Development Union got attracted into his affairs sequel to the publications of the village girl. She threw the challenge of even soliciting for food items and cash donation for him. So, we owe her a lot of gratitude.”
The union’s efforts have already made a significant impact. They have fully paid for Mr. Adebisi’s first and second surgeries and, in collaboration with the Excel Microfinance Bank, have a plan in place to ensure his comfort for the next year. During the event, OOEDU outlined Mr. Adebisi’s ongoing needs for which the welfare fund is being established. These include a more accessible home with specialized facilities, “tech-friendly” mobility aids such as an automated wheelchair and buggy, and a continuous supply of food and personal care services. The union also made a direct appeal to the Executive Chairman of Ibarapa East Local Government, Alhaji Kazeem Arogundade, to consider offering Mr. Adebisi an automatic employment opportunity.
Looking ahead, OOEDU’s plan to establish a Welfare Trust Fund is aimed at providing a structured and sustainable way to support similar cases in the future.
