Bauchi State has witnessed a dramatic political development as Governor Bala Mohammed has officially dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), marking one of the most significant defections in Nigeria’s recent political history.
The announcement was made on Saturday at the Government House, Bauchi, where the governor appeared alongside top APM officials and loyalists who also defected with him. The move followed an expanded stakeholders’ meeting held behind closed doors earlier in the day, which reportedly finalized the decision.
His Excellency Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, who until now served as the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, said the decision came after extensive consultations with political stakeholders across the state and beyond.
“After extensive consultation, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the Allied Peoples Movement (APM),” he declared.
He explained that the defection was driven by the need to reposition politically ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that his supporters needed a stable and effective political platform.
According to him, “We cannot allow our people to run out without a credible and effective political platform. Our duty is to provide energy and direction.”
The governor also expressed appreciation to the PDP for its role in his political journey, noting that the party provided the platform through which he was elected and contributed to governance in Bauchi State.
“It has been a platform through which we have contributed to the development of our state. We remain grateful for this history and the opportunities provided,” he added.
APM leadership welcomed the governor into the party, describing his defection as a major boost to its national visibility and political structure ahead of the next election cycle.
The development is expected to reshape political calculations in Bauchi State and across the national political landscape, as analysts predict increased realignments ahead of 2027.
