A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State and aspirant for the Ibadan NorthWest/Ibadan SouthWest Federal Constituency, Mayegun Sunday Olusegun Babanumi, has called for a governance model anchored on affection, trust, and shared humanity.
Speaking in a reflective address to citizens and supporters, Babanumi said the essence of good governance goes beyond policies and political rhetoric, stressing that the real foundation of leadership lies in the values that guide public service.
The aspirant noted that while political power often tends to divide people, citizens must remain focused on what unites them as a society.
“In a world where power often seems to divide, we must focus on what unites us—our shared humanity,” he said. “The essence of good governance isn’t just about policies; it is about the values we embed in them, particularly affection and trust.”
According to Babanumi, leadership must be defined by a genuine understanding of the people’s struggles and aspirations. He emphasized that leaders must possess humane affection—an inner commitment to the welfare of citizens and the ability to empathize with their everyday challenges.
He further explained that trust is equally important, as communities must be empowered to shape their present realities while preparing for future opportunities and aspirations.
“When leaders prioritize affection and trust, governance transforms. Policies become people-centric, leaders listen, communities thrive, and nations grow stronger,” he said.
The PDP aspirant also outlined what he described as the ideal framework for people-oriented governance. In his vision, leaders must serve with empathy rather than ego, while decisions should prioritize collective well-being over personal interests. He added that transparency and accountability must become standard practices in governance rather than rare exceptions.
Babanumi argued that building a resilient society requires collective responsibility from both leaders and citizens.
“This isn’t idealism; it is pragmatism. When we share affection and trust, we build resilient societies where every voice matters and every citizen feels valued,” he stated.
He added that the journey toward better governance begins with citizens themselves, urging Nigerians to embrace unity and mutual respect as key drivers of progress.
“The path to better governance starts with us—how we treat one another and the values we uphold. Let us choose a future where power uplifts rather than oppresses, and where affection and trust become the currencies of progress,” he said.
Reaffirming his political aspiration, Babanumi said his vision is to promote leadership with empathy and integrity, promising to champion policies that prioritize the welfare and voices of constituents.
“This is what I, Mayegun Sunday Olusegun Babanumi, stand for, and I strongly believe it is possible. Together, let us govern with heart,” he concluded.
