The attention of the Igbo community has been drawn to the recent arrest of Engr. Chibuike Azubike and three others by the Lagos State Police Command over their attempt to install an “Obi of Lagos” and unveil a proposed ₦1.5 billion palace project in Amuwo Odofin.
While we respect the cultural heritage of Ndigbo and value the dignity of our traditional institutions, it is imperative to state clearly that such attempts to create parallel titles outside Igboland are unnecessary, unlawful, and capable of creating tension with our host communities. Lagos State already has a well-structured traditional system, headed by the Oba of Lagos, which must be respected at all times.
I therefore call on Igbo leaders, unions, and stakeholders across Nigeria to discourage the trend of indiscriminate madness called chieftaincy titles and wasting of time, resources and credibility called installation ceremonies outside our homeland. The resources and energy put into these events can be more productively channeled into supporting the less privileged, funding youth empowerment initiatives, awarding scholarships, building businesses, and improving the welfare of our widows and struggling families.
Our strength as Ndigbo is not in multiplying titles but in uplifting one another, preserving our reputation, and living peacefully with our neighbors. Let us focus on building bridges, strengthening community development, and contributing positively to the progress of the places we live.
Respect for the laws, traditions, and authorities of our host states is a mark of wisdom. It is also the surest way to protect the image of the Igbo nation and ensure the safety and dignity of our people.
You people should stop creating problems for the younger Igbos. Go to your village and take a chieftaincy title that will be recognised by your local government and your society/community and stop embarrassing yourselves and your family and in extention, the Igbo community.
Signed,
Hon. Tallest Innocent
