ECOWAS Youth Ambassador, Amb. Onaolapo Ademola Omiyale FEIPA, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in what he described as emerging challenges within the Oyo State chapter of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In an open letter addressed to the President and National Leader of the APC, Omiyale expressed concern over developments within the party that he said could undermine efforts to reclaim Oyo State from the opposition in the next gubernatorial election.
The APC stalwart alleged that there were growing concerns among party members regarding perceived attempts by some influential figures within the party to shape the succession process in a manner considered exclusionary by many stakeholders. According to him, claims that such actions are being carried out with the backing of the Presidency have further heightened tensions and deepened divisions within the party.
Omiyale identified several prominent party leaders who have been linked by stakeholders to ongoing political realignments and strategic decisions within the state chapter. He stressed, however, that every member of the party has the right to participate in political activities but noted that concerns had been raised about efforts to influence the outcome of candidate selection processes ahead of the 2027 elections.
A significant aspect of the letter focused on the reported governorship ambition of Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, who currently represents Oyo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
While acknowledging Senator Alli’s contributions to the APC and public service, Omiyale noted that some stakeholders had raised concerns about the senator’s traditional title as Ekerin Balogun of Ibadanland and his membership of the Olubadan-in-Council.
According to him, questions have emerged regarding the compatibility of active partisan political participation with the traditional responsibilities attached to membership of the Olubadan-in-Council under customary practices and existing chieftaincy regulations in Oyo State.
He urged the party to seek comprehensive legal clarification on the matter to avoid potential disputes and litigation that could affect its electoral fortunes.
The APC member further warned that unresolved legal or constitutional issues relating to the eligibility of any aspirant could expose the party to prolonged legal battles before or after the elections, citing concerns among stakeholders about possible electoral implications.
Omiyale also highlighted what he described as growing dissatisfaction among grassroots members who feel excluded from consultations and decision-making processes within the party.
To address the situation, he called on President Tinubu to encourage internal democracy, fairness, and inclusiveness within the Oyo APC. He also advocated the establishment of a high-level reconciliation committee to engage aggrieved stakeholders and promote unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
Additionally, he urged the President to ensure that no individual or group is perceived as acting under presidential authority to impose candidates on party members, while also recommending a thorough legal and constitutional review of issues that may affect the eligibility of aspirants.
He expressed confidence that the APC could overcome its internal challenges through dialogue, fairness, and adherence to democratic principles, adding that unity remains essential for the party’s chances of reclaiming power in Oyo State.
The open letter comes amid increasing political activities and consultations within the APC as stakeholders begin positioning for the 2027 electoral cycle.
