The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State has stepped up its preparations for the 2027 general elections, following an expanded meeting involving members of the State Executive and Local Government Chairmen-Elect.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, brought together key stakeholders of the party to strategise on strengthening its structures across the state. Proceedings commenced with an opening prayer led by Chief Akinwunmi Akinfewa, setting the tone for deliberations.
In his welcome address, the State Chairman-Elect, Afees Onaara, charged party leaders to remain committed to the growth of the ADC through prayers, unity, and active engagement. He expressed optimism that the party would emerge victorious in both Oyo State and across Nigeria in 2027.
Onaara highlighted the evolution of the current ADC movement, noting that it has attracted members from various political parties who now see the ADC as a credible platform for progress. He also acknowledged the contributions of former National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, for his leadership and support, as well as the transition of leadership to David Mark.
Reiterating the party’s focus, the chairman-elect stressed that winning the 2027 elections remains the top priority. He disclosed that party congresses had been successfully conducted from the ward to the state level, adding that the ADC currently enjoys the backing of genuine leaders at both national and state levels.
He urged all Local Government Chairmen-Elect to immediately return to their councils and begin regular meetings, while also mandating them to visit every ward within their jurisdictions. To further strengthen coordination, Onaara announced plans to establish committees that would oversee mobilisation efforts across all 33 local governments on a senatorial basis.
The chairman-elect also emphasised the importance of building strong polling unit structures, noting that effective grassroots presence would be key to the party’s success. He clarified that current executives are serving in acting capacity pending their official swearing-in, scheduled for May 12.
Providing legal updates, the party’s Legal Adviser assured members that a favourable outcome was expected from the Supreme Court regarding ongoing matters affecting the party.
Several stakeholders at the meeting delivered goodwill messages, urging unity, inclusiveness, and sustained mobilisation. Speakers, including Hon. Wale Afolabi, Hon. Ibrahim, and Hon. Adex, called for intensified grassroots engagement and active participation of aspirants within their local governments.
Party leaders also stressed the need to attract credible individuals into the political process, while advocating stronger inclusion of women and youths in party activities. Contributions from the Women Leader, Alhaja Tawa, and Youth Leader, Mr. Daudu, underscored the importance of broader participation across all demographics.
In his remarks, State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Johnson, revealed plans to deploy digital tools, including WhatsApp platforms, to enhance communication and mobilisation across the state. He added that aspirants would play strategic roles in driving grassroots engagement.
Other speakers, including Adekola Adeoye, urged local government leaders to carry all members along, visit wards regularly, and work collectively toward the party’s success.
The meeting concluded with closing remarks by Onaara, who expressed confidence in the party’s direction and offered prayers for its continued progress. The closing prayer was delivered by Alfa Taofeek.
The expanded meeting is seen as a crucial step in ADC’s build-up to its official takeover and swearing-in ceremony slated for May 12. Party members were subsequently tasked to return to their respective local governments and commence immediate grassroots mobilisation efforts aimed at securing victory in the 2027 elections.
