The African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Convention held yesterday in Abuja was a success despite initial challenges. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) allegedly denied the party access to Eagle Square and two other venues. However, the convention was successfully relocated and held at Rainbow Events Centre, where over 3,000 participants gathered under the theme “So That Nigeria May Work.”
At the convention, ADC leaders alleged that the party, along with other opposition parties, is being witch-hunted by the ruling APC in a bid to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The leaders strongly criticized the actions of the government and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain fair, impartial, and committed to upholding democratic standards in Nigeria.
A major highlight of the convention was the amendment of the party’s constitution through a transparent delegates’ voting process, further strengthening internal democracy within the party. The ADC also announced the expulsion of some members, including Bala, Abejide, Kingsley Temitope, Noman Obinna, Kennedy Odion, Stella Chukwuma, and four others, as part of efforts to reposition the party for greater effectiveness.
Oyo State was well represented at the convention by the ADC Chairman, Hon Afees Adelowo OnaAra, alongside key leaders including Hon Kamil Akinlabi, Chief Bisi Ilaka, oloye Taofeek Adegboyega, Architect Bashiru Lawal, and Alhaja Kafilat Olayiwola, with a total of 90 delegates representing the state. The convention ended on a strong note, with a renewed commitment from party leaders and members, affirming that ADC is coming out stronger and ready to take governance across the states and at the federal level.
