Delegates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) have formally ratified amendments to the party’s constitution and affirmed the emergence of a new National Working Committee (NWC) led by former Senate President, David Mark.
The resolutions were reached at the party’s national convention held in Abuja, where delegates drawn from across Nigeria overwhelmingly endorsed both the constitutional changes and the new leadership structure. The development marks a significant turning point in the party’s ongoing internal reorganisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The convention witnessed a decisive vote in favour of amending key provisions of the party’s constitution, with a large majority of accredited delegates supporting the reforms. The amendments are aimed at strengthening internal processes and positioning the party for broader national appeal.
Officials of the convention disclosed that over 1,500 delegates participated in the exercise, with more than 90 per cent backing the constitutional review. The process also ratified earlier resolutions adopted at various National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings of the party.
In addition to constitutional changes, the convention formally confirmed the dissolution of the previous leadership structure and the full takeover of party affairs by the Mark-led NWC. The new leadership is expected to steer the party for the next four years.
Speaking after his emergence, David Mark described the convention as a landmark moment in the party’s history, expressing optimism that the ADC is now better positioned to compete for national power. He urged party members to remain united and committed to the party’s vision.
The convention also approved several strategic decisions, including adjustments to membership requirements and the suspension of certain zoning provisions, measures seen as efforts to enhance inclusiveness and flexibility within the party structure.
Meanwhile, the party took disciplinary actions against some members accused of anti-party activities, reinforcing its stance on internal discipline amid ongoing leadership disputes.
The outcome of the convention signals a renewed push by the African Democratic Congress to consolidate its structure and strengthen its political relevance as the country gradually approaches the next electoral cycle.
