In a move to strengthen grassroots infrastructure and community wellbeing, Dr Debo Akande on Wednesday commissioned solar-powered streetlights at Oshofi Compound, Ward 1, in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.
The commissioning ceremony, held at Oja-Iba, attracted key stakeholders, community leaders, and residents, who described the intervention as timely and impactful, particularly in improving security and boosting socio-economic activities in the area.
Welcoming attendees, the Ward 1 Councillor commended Dr Akande for the initiative, describing it as a clear demonstration of responsive and people-centered leadership at the grassroots.
Speaking at the event, Chief Nureni Akanbi, Arole Ile Iba, praised Dr Akande’s consistent engagement with the community, noting that the solar project reflects his dedication to service. He also reaffirmed the readiness of residents to support Dr Akande’s future ambitions, while appreciating the efforts of Seyi Makinde for ongoing development across the state.
In his keynote address, Dr Akande expressed gratitude for the warm reception and explained that the solar streetlight project represents the first phase of a broader development agenda. He noted that Ward 1 was intentionally selected as a pilot, with plans to extend similar initiatives to other wards within the local government.
Emphasizing the importance of education, Dr Akande described it as a cornerstone for sustainable development. He advocated compulsory vocational training as a strategy to equip youths with practical skills, enhance self-reliance, and curb unemployment. He also revealed plans, subject to prevailing conditions, to facilitate the establishment of a school in the community.
Addressing traders at the event, Dr Akande identified limited access to finance as a major challenge facing small businesses. Drawing from his leadership at Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency, he disclosed that the agency recently disbursed ₦1.5 billion to 1,000 youth beneficiaries to support agricultural ventures. He further assured that efforts are underway to collaborate with microfinance institutions to provide low-interest loans, particularly for market women.
Dr Akande also commended Governor Makinde’s visionary leadership and urged residents to sustain their support for the administration to consolidate ongoing achievements.
Reaffirming his commitment to public service, he stated that his mission remains focused on giving back to society and improving the living standards of the people.
The event witnessed a strong turnout, including representatives of the Ibadan South-West Local Government Chairman, the Chief of Staff, councillors, party leaders, religious figures, traditional rulers, market stakeholders, and residents—highlighting widespread support for the initiative.
