A major political storm is gathering in Oyo State as Adebo Ogundoyin, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election following overwhelming calls from party leaders and stakeholders.
Ogundoyin’s declaration comes amid growing political conversations on who succeeds incumbent governor Seyi Makinde, whose administration has continued to shape governance and development narratives in the state. Recent policy moves, including financial support initiatives for workers, have further intensified discussions around continuity and succession ahead of 2027
The declaration in which is already sending shockwaves across the state’s political space, comes after a crucial zonal meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibarapaland, where influential stakeholders unanimously urged the lawmaker to step into the race.
Responding to what he described as a “clear and compelling” call, Ogundoyin confirmed that his decision was not driven by personal ambition, but by a deep sense of responsibility to the people.
“This decision goes beyond personal ambition,” he stated, noting that his aspiration is rooted in the collective desire of the people for “focused, inclusive, and result-driven leadership.”
The Speaker further disclosed that consultations with key stakeholders in Eruwa, Ibarapa East Local Government, reinforced the same message a strong, unified demand for his candidacy and readiness among the people to support his bid.
“I am grateful for the confidence reposed in me,” he added, assuring supporters of his readiness to take on the task with “integrity and purpose,” while acknowledging the weight of expectations ahead.
Ogundoyin, who currently serves as Speaker of the 9th and 10th Oyo State House of Assembly and is a former Chairman of the Conference of Speakers in Nigeria, is widely regarded as one of the rising political figures in the state.
With growing endorsements from Ibarapaland and beyond, his declaration marks what many describe as a defining moment in Oyo’s political trajectory.
