GSM: Beyond the Osimhen Comparison – Tallest

The description of Governor Seyi Makinde as “The Osimhen of Oyo State” may appear flattering at first glance, but a deeper reflection reveals that the comparison unintentionally limits the scale of his achievements and influence. While Victor Osimhen is an exceptional footballer of his generation, placing Seyi Makinde in Osimhen’s league does not fully capture the breadth, longevity, and structural impact of the governor’s leadership.

Osimhen represents current excellence and peak form—a star of the moment whose brilliance, though remarkable, is still unfolding. However, Seyi Makinde’s political journey and governance style go beyond momentary brilliance. His leadership reflects institution-building, systemic reform, and long-term vision, qualities that transcend generational stardom.

A more accurate analogy would place Seyi Makinde in the league of football legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo or Pelé figures whose greatness is defined not only by talent, but by consistency, reinvention, discipline, and enduring impact. Ronaldo’s legacy is built on sustained excellence across leagues and eras; Pelé’s greatness lies in redefining the game itself. Similarly, Makinde’s governance has focused on restructuring Oyo State’s economy, improving infrastructure, enhancing workers’ welfare, promoting security, and institutionalizing transparency.

Unlike Osimhen, who is still writing his story, Makinde has already demonstrated political maturity, resilience under pressure, and an ability to deliver results across multiple terms. His leadership is not just about popularity or flair, but about transformational governance that leaves lasting foundations beyond his time in office.

Therefore, to describe Seyi Makinde merely as “the Osimhen of Oyo State” is to understate his stature. He is not a rising star in need of validation; he is a proven leader whose performance places him among the greats, akin to Ronaldo or Pelé icons whose legacies are measured by impact, endurance, and history-making achievements.

Nevertheless, while the Osimhen comparison may be well-intentioned, it does not do justice to the scale of Seyi Makinde’s leadership. He is not in Osimhen’s league; rather, Osimhen’s league is still aspiring toward the level of enduring greatness that Makinde represents in Oyo State politics.
