October 17, 2024, marked a significant day for girls’ empowerment in Ibadan, Nigeria.
The Young and Woman Initiative (YAWI) hosted an inspiring event to commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child at Zonta House, Jericho. Seven schools participated, bringing together over 100 students, teachers, and mentors.
The event kicked off with an essay competition on the topic “Breaking barriers: The Role of Technology and Innovation in Advancing Opportunities for Nigerian Girls.” Students from each school showcased their writing skills, sharing innovative ideas on harnessing technology to empower girls.
Ambassador Agbeja delivered an impactful lecture on menstrual hygiene, emphasizing the importance of proper care during menstruation. She debunked myths and shared practical tips, encouraging students to prioritize their health and well-being.
Mrs. Oyedoyin Baoku’s insightful lecture on “Choosing a Career Path” sparked lively discussions. She stressed the significance of passion-driven careers, warning against parental pressure and societal expectations. Students shared their short-term goals, and Mrs. Baoku offered valuable guidance.
After the lectures, Miss Ifeoluwa facilitated an engaging icebreaker session, fostering connections among students. The event culminated in the presentation of gifts and certificates to the essay competition winners:
1. Ayo-Adebowale Tamilore (The Vale College) – 1st position
2. Adeyemo Esther (United Missionary Comprehensive College) – 2nd position
3. Aluko Atinuke (Queen’s College) – 3rd position
Winners received exciting gifts, including laptops, school bags, lunch boxes, exercise books, and mathematical sets. Each participant received a pack of sanitary pads, courtesy of the YAWI Team.
The International Day of the Girl Child 2024 event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of empowering girls. YAWI’s initiative inspires us to:
