In an exclusive interview on Vintage FM’s Agbami Òsèlú, a PDP.Chiefriain in Oyo State, Honourable Samson Opeyemi Fatola shared his thoughts on the state of the nation and economy. He emphasized the need for Nigeria’s restructuring, citing the country’s constitution as a major obstacle to progress.
Fatola argued that the constitution contains laxities that must be repealed, amended, or rewritten to allow for meaningful development. He advocated for a return to true federalism or regionalism, as seen in the first republic.
When questioned about the lifestyle of government officials versus citizens, Fatola noted that leaders practice capitalism while expecting socialism from the populace. He criticized President Bola Tinubu’s profligacy, citing the purchase of new presidential aircraft and maintenance of a large convoy amidst economic instability.
Fatola distinguished between “hungry” and “angry” Nigerians, describing the latter as elites who have benefited from subsidy regimes and forex racketeering. He explained that these individuals use hungry citizens to fight for their interests, leading to misconceptions about recent protests.
On democracy and military take-over calls, Fatola emphasized that Nigeria’s leaders should have done better. He praised Nigerians’ soft-heartedness towards leaders, urging openness to correction and adjustment.
Fatola also highlighted the need for electoral awareness, comparing Nigeria to western countries where citizens understand governance better. He concluded by urging Nigerians to refrain from derogatory remarks and encouraging youths to engage in open dialogue when faced with challenges.
