I sat down to check the word democracy and how we practice it in Nigeria, I didn’t see anything Democratic we are practicing. I only remember that a hero, the winner of 1993 presidential election, MKO Abiola was murdered on June 12th, 1993 in a cold blood.
What was his crime?
Do we call this democracy where meritocracy has been sacrificed in the altar of mediocrity? Democracy where law promulgators are law violators? Democracy where public servants find it right to indulge in fanfare of squander mania leaving the people they claim to represent without a hint of remorse? Or democracy where our vote does not count, democracy where the pendulum of justice is tilted in favour of the highest bidder?
There’s no Democratic president in Nigeria and even in the world and I said it. Truly, who is the Democratic president; Tinubu, Trump, Obama or who even in Britain? We should understand that democracy is an illusion we cannot have. Democracy where capitalist, imperialist, patriarchal, religion, tribe like we are seeing today in Nigeria and in the world is in charge is a Glitch. If you remove religion, capitalism and imperialism, then you will have socialism and because they want money, no government will be there, you know they are afraid of the real power of the people.
We cannot have democracy with this type of leaders in Nigeria (Aso Rock). Do they even know what is democracy? Tell them that democracy is really freedom. People are not oppressed. Today, people are not organised because they are prevented from organising themselves. That’s the key point.
Check out in countries where near democracy is held in high esteem and leadership reserved for people of proven integrity, some characters especially those most wanted criminals in the past ruling us today in Nigeria have no business anywhere around a million miles to the minimum leadership position; but after their flamboyant display of prodigality with public fund, coupled with their impudent manipulation of election outcomes especially the 2023 election in Nigeria which was a departure from even the lowest character benchmark for elections measuring from the Nigerian standard, they rewarded themselves with all manner of positions including the Ministerial position; same people who should be spending the rest of their few years left in their earthly sojourn in the slammer.
The fake democracy especially Nigeria’s insane democratic pattern, has turned politics into a safe playground for men of low pedigree with dented trajectories who understand very little or nothing about the currency of character and it’s worth but only concerned about material possession at the detriment of the poor majority whose interest they claim to represent.
Remember sometime around December 2023, 27 Lawmakers from Rivers State defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the political platform under which they (through whatever means – whether hook or crook) emerged as Lawmakers and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). They announced there defection on the floor of the hallowed chambers and on a latter date held an elaborate event at the glare of the whole world where they formally denounced their marriages with their former party -PDP and embraced their new found love -APC.
Consequent upon that and in line with Section 109(1)(g) of the Constitution of Nigeria, their seats were declared vacant and the vacuum created by their exit was brought to the knowledge of the country’s election umpire who till date has kept mum on the matter and nowthey claimed to be back to PDP and was suspended by the president alone side a Democratically elected governor in acclaimed Democratic settings.
They waste our resources celebrating Democracy Day while our children, women, men and even our soldiers are been killed on a daily basis in different locations and in different states of Nigeria. Benue State that use to be the food basket of this country, is now blood basket of the country. The land once lush with green now hush and grim. Filled with Sullen faces, with no hope to survive the day like arid ground in want of rain, pain is plain.
When daybreak, folks that supposed to go to their farms are reluctant because the farm are not safest places to be. Nightfall is now heartbreak, heartache over destroyed homes, destroyed crops, how many people to be slaughtered. Once lovely homes in Nigeria now echo with silence,
Nigeria loud with violent, flooding with the blood of the young and old alike. Great sons and daughters fall like autumn leaves, dead bodies scattered like mustard seeds, homes empty out while the IDP banks are flooded with the young and old all in their ranks.
Living is worse than a brutal and our so called leaders are busy celebrating Democracy Day with a lot of people’s resources instead of having a remorseful remembrance of MKO who they killed. This killings had lasted for more than 24 hours and they keep telling us that tough times don’t last. Tell that to the people of Delta, tell that to the people of Ondo, tell that to the people of Rivers, tell that to the people of Jos, Zamfara, Niger, Kogi, Imo, Guma who watched herdsmen turn gunmen, tell that to the people of Tunin who have been swept from their homes like brooms to files, their homes and belongings transferred to bonfires, tell that to the people of Sankara, logo, Kwande who have had bullets spread on them like rainwater, tell that to the youths whom this have cost them their future, tell that to people who do nothing but levitate.
Let Nigerians breath, stop this retaliation of 2020 EndSars lekki Tollgate saga.
