The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Oyo State Chapter, is deeply saddened and outraged by the tragic and avoidable death of a promising young student who was fatally shot by a stray bullet in Ibadan while en route to sit for his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, especially the father and twin brother who were present during this harrowing incident. The young champ had his future ahead of him, a future that has now been unjustly cut short.
NYCN Oyo strongly condemns the reckless discharge of a firearm by the police officer involved. The fact that a minor was killed during what should have been a routine traffic enforcement exercise is both unacceptable and heartbreaking. We demand that the officer responsible be swiftly apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Accountability must be non-negotiable.
We also call on the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) to immediately review and reform its enforcement procedures. Operations meant to protect lives must not become the reason lives are lost. While we recognize the importance of addressing traffic violations, such enforcement must be conducted with utmost professionalism, restraint, and respect for human life.
Furthermore, we urge the general public to remain law-abiding, especially in matters of road safety. Disregarding traffic laws not only endangers one’s own life but also the lives of others as this painful incident has shown.
As youth leaders and advocates for justice, NYCN Oyo stands in solidarity with Nigerian students and all concerned citizens demanding answers. We will continue to work with relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served and that this tragedy leads to reforms that will protect our young people in the future.
