…Party Challenges APC Candidate to Account for Years in Office
The Allied People’s Movement (APM), Lagos State, has challenged the APC governorship candidate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, to explain why proposals to decentralise government services are only being presented to Lagosians as fresh campaign promises after his years in government.
In a statement signed by its State Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Kazeem Olalekan, the party said it welcomed proposals aimed at improving the lives of Lagos residents but questioned the timing of Hamzat’s recent pledge to establish mini-secretariats across some divisions of the state and develop each area according to its economic potential.
APM noted that Hamzat had served in the Lagos State Government for several years, first as a commissioner and later as deputy governor, giving him considerable opportunity and authority to champion such reforms.
The party therefore asked why residents of areas such as Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry still travel considerable distances to access government services if decentralisation is considered necessary.
It also questioned the absence of a comprehensive division-based economic development strategy covering Lagos’ five divisions of Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe.
On transportation, healthcare, infrastructure and other sectors, APM challenged the APC candidate to explain why issues such as integrated transportation, hospital expansion and improved accommodation for healthcare workers remain campaign promises.
“The people of Lagos deserve answers, not recycled promises,” the party stated.
APM urged Hamzat and the APC to provide timelines, budgets and implementation frameworks for their proposed policies, while also giving an account of what was achieved during their years in government.
The party argued that governance should be about identifying problems, developing solutions and implementing them while in office, rather than making promises primarily during election seasons.
APM further called on Lagosians to assess candidates based on performance, accountability and credibility ahead of the 2027 election.
“Dr. Hamzat and the APC must tell Lagosians what prevented them from doing these things yesterday before asking Lagosians to believe they will do them tomorrow,” the party declared.
