A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in Oyo State, Leader of PDP Ward 8 in Ibadan North West Local Government and Ibadan NorthWest/SouthWest Federal Constituency Hopeful, Mayegun Sunday Olusegun Babanumi, has formally resigned his membership from the party after nearly three decades of active involvement.
In a resignation letter dated May 7, 2026, and addressed to the National Chairman of the PDP through the Ward 8 Chairman in Ibadan North West LGA, Babanumi announced his immediate withdrawal from the party, citing the lingering internal crisis within the PDP as the major reason for his decision.
The former PDP stalwart, who described himself as a pioneer and loyal member of the party in Oyo State since 1998, stated that the decision followed extensive consultations with his family, political associates, and constituents across the Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West Federal Constituency.
According to him, remaining in the party under the current circumstances would not align with his political vision and commitment to effective representation of the people.
Babanumi noted that he was unwilling to lead his supporters “into political despair,” stressing that stepping away from the PDP had become necessary in order to continue pursuing the interests and aspirations of his constituents.
Despite his resignation, the Ward 8 leader expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunities it offered him over the years. He also commended the leadership style and developmental contributions of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, acknowledging the positive impacts of the administration on party members and residents of the state.
He maintained that he harbours no resentment towards the PDP or its leadership and wished the party success in its future political engagements.
Excerpts from the Resignation Statement
“This decision was not taken lightly. After deep reflection and wide consultations with my family, political associates, and constituents regarding the lingering crisis within the PDP, I have concluded that stepping away from the PDP is necessary to better serve the interests of the people of Ibadan North West/Ibadan South West Federal Constituency whom I seek to represent, since I am not ready to lead my supporters into political despair.”
“I remain grateful for the platform and opportunities the PDP provided me since I became a pioneer and loyal member of the party in Oyo State since 1998. I humbly and sincerely appreciate His Excellency Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership and positive impacts in the state and on we his followers.”
The resignation letter was copied to the PDP State Chairman in Oyo State, the Ibadan North West Local Government Chairman of the party, and the Ward 8 Secretary.
