Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, has pledged to embark on comprehensive reforms aimed at transforming the country’s troubled electricity sector and improving power supply across the nation.
Speaking during his appearance before the Senate on Wednesday, Tegbe said his administration would focus on practical and sustainable solutions capable of addressing the longstanding challenges affecting electricity generation, transmission, and distribution in Nigeria.
The minister noted that while Nigerians desire stable electricity, solving the sector’s problems requires deliberate reforms, transparency, and major infrastructure improvements rather than unrealistic promises.
According to him, the ministry will prioritize strengthening transmission infrastructure, improving electricity distribution, increasing generation capacity, and ensuring stable gas supply to power generating companies.
Tegbe also identified inadequate metering and recurring national grid collapses as some of the major obstacles confronting the sector, stressing that urgent steps would be taken to address them.
He revealed that Nigeria still faces a significant metering deficit despite ongoing interventions and assured Nigerians that efforts would be intensified to close the gap and improve efficiency within the electricity value chain.
The minister further pledged to enforce accountability and discipline among operators in the sector while tackling vested interests allegedly benefiting from the current inefficiencies.
“I will not stand here and promise Nigerians 24-hour electricity tomorrow,” Tegbe stated, adding that his focus remains on achieving realistic progress and delivering measurable improvements in power supply.
He expressed optimism that Nigerians would begin to witness positive changes in the sector within the coming months as the reforms take shape.
