Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has cautioned aspirants within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) against actions that could destabilize the party following primary elections.
Speaking amid growing political activities ahead of future elections, Shettima stressed the importance of party unity, urging contestants to remain loyal and committed even if they fail to secure party tickets.
He warned that the aftermath of primaries often determines the strength or weakness of a political party, noting that grievances and internal conflicts have historically undermined electoral success. According to him, aspirants must demonstrate political maturity by accepting the outcomes of transparent processes.
The Vice President emphasized that the APC’s continued dominance depends on discipline, cohesion, and the ability of members to place party interests above personal ambition. He added that internal democracy should not become a source of division but rather a mechanism for strengthening the party.
Shettima further called on party leaders and stakeholders to ensure fairness and credibility in the conduct of primaries, as this would reduce tensions and foster acceptance of results among aspirants.
His remarks come at a time when political alignments and permutations are intensifying, with many politicians positioning themselves for upcoming contests. Observers believe the call is aimed at preventing post-primary disputes that could weaken the APC’s chances in future elections.
The Vice President reiterated that loyalty to the party must extend beyond winning tickets, urging aspirants to support eventual candidates and work collectively toward electoral victory.
