APC House of Representatives aspirant Hon. Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo has called for stronger protection of workers’ rights and safer workplaces as the world marks the World Day for Safety and Health at Work.
Ogunbayo, popularly known as OJO, said every worker deserves to return home safe and healthy, stressing that workplace safety should be treated as a fundamental right rather than a privilege.
The annual observance, championed by the International Labour Organization, promotes safe working environments and the dignity of labour across the globe.
Speaking on the realities facing workers in Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, OJO noted that many artisans, traders, civil servants, and entrepreneurs still operate under unsafe conditions where health concerns are often neglected.
“A productive society is built on the strength, safety, and well-being of its workforce. When we protect our workers, we protect our future,” he said.
He emphasized that safety must move beyond discussions and become an established culture in homes, markets, offices, and workplaces.
According to him, urgent steps must include stronger enforcement of workplace safety standards, increased awareness for employers and employees, and policy-driven support systems that prioritize health and welfare.
Ogunbayo also called for collaboration among government institutions, private organizations, and local communities to build safer environments for workers.
He added that leadership should not only focus on economic growth but also on protecting the people whose labour drives development.
“No dream is worth a life, and no job should cost a future.”
The aspirant urged residents and business owners across the constituency to take safety seriously every day, describing workers as the backbone of society whose welfare must remain a top priority.
