An Ibadan-based social justice advocate has strongly condemned the alleged third-term consensus arrangement involving Lagelu lawmaker, Hon. Olajide Akintunde (AKT), describing the move as “self-centered and a betrayal of democratic values.”
In a statement made available to journalists on Friday, the advocate criticized both the lawmaker and key political leaders in Lagelu Local Government for what he termed a deliberate attempt to monopolize power and suppress internal democracy.
The reaction follows reports that political stakeholders in the area endorsed AKT for another term through a consensus arrangement; a development that has sparked growing controversy among party members and residents.
“This is not leadership; this is political greed taken too far,” the advocate said. “How can a handful of leaders sit behind closed doors and decide the future of an entire constituency? It is unfair, unjust, and completely against the spirit of democracy.”
He accused the Lagelu Chairman and other party leaders of prioritizing personal interests over the collective good of the people, insisting that the move denies qualified aspirants the opportunity to contest and contribute fresh ideas.
“You people are self-centered. Public office is not a personal estate that can be controlled indefinitely. The people of Lagelu deserve options, not imposition,” he added.
The advocate further called on Seyi Makinde to urgently intervene and address the situation before it escalates into a broader political crisis.
According to him, the governor has a responsibility to protect democratic values and ensure that internal party processes remain transparent and inclusive.
“We urge the governor to step in and restore order. Allowing this kind of arrangement to stand will send a wrong signal that democracy can be manipulated to favor a few individuals,” he said.
