The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, has cautioned politicians across Nigeria to desist from exploiting religion as a tool for political advantage ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The revered monarch gave the warning amid growing concerns over the increasing role of religious sentiments in Nigeria’s electoral process, stressing that such practices could threaten national unity and peaceful coexistence.
Oba Ladoja emphasised that politics should be driven by competence, integrity, and the ability to deliver good governance rather than religious affiliation. He urged political actors to prioritise issues that promote development and unity, rather than actions capable of deepening divisions among Nigerians.
The monarch further noted that the nation’s diversity should be seen as a strength, not a weakness, warning that the manipulation of religious differences for political gain could lead to avoidable tension and instability.
His remarks come as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, where religion is already being identified as a key factor in voter alignment and campaign strategies.
Oba Ladoja therefore called on stakeholders, including political parties, community leaders, and citizens, to promote tolerance, mutual respect, and peaceful engagement throughout the electoral period.
He reiterated the need for unity across religious and ethnic lines, urging Nigerians to reject divisive narratives and work collectively towards a stable and prosperous nation.
