A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and House of Representatives hopeful for Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, Oluwatobi John Ogunbayo, has expressed strong support for the proposal to establish state police in Nigeria, describing it as a necessary step toward addressing the country’s growing security challenges.
Ogunbayo made this known in a statement while reacting to the security reform proposal by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that decentralising policing would bring security operations closer to the people and improve response to local threats.
According to the APC hopeful, Nigeria’s security architecture must evolve to meet the realities faced by communities across the country, stressing that state policing would empower state governments to respond swiftly to security issues within their jurisdictions.
He said for many years, communities have had to wait for security solutions that are often distant from the grassroots, adding that the introduction of state police would bridge that gap and strengthen protection of lives and property.
“As an aspirant for the House of Representatives representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency, I understand the daily security concerns of our people. Decentralised policing will mean faster responses, safer streets, and stronger communities,” Ogunbayo stated.
The politician commended President Tinubu for what he described as courage in advancing the conversation on security sector reform, noting that the proposal reflects a commitment to improving safety across Nigeria.
He also called on the National Assembly of Nigeria to support the initiative in the interest of national security and community peace.
Ogunbayo emphasized that ensuring the safety of citizens must remain a priority for government at all levels, adding that Nigerians deserve to live in secure and peaceful communities.
He concluded by reiterating that strengthening local security structures would play a vital role in building a safer and more stable Nigeria.
