Alhaji Abdulrahman Olanrewaju Adepoju, The Executive Chairman of Ibadan Northwest Local Government, has charged members of the newly inaugurated Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC) to discharge their duties diligently, uphold transparency, and work collectively towards safeguarding lives and property within the Local Government area.
The Chairman gave the admonition during the official inauguration of the 16-member committee and the presentation of ₦100,000 each to ten victims of the recent fire disaster at Akilapa Market. The event was held at the Council Secretariat, Onireke.
In his address, the Chairman described the inauguration of the LEMC as a proactive step aimed at strengthening emergency preparedness and response mechanisms at the grassroots. He emphasized that the committee is saddled with the responsibility of coordinating disaster management efforts, mitigating risks, and ensuring swift intervention during emergencies.
According to the Council Boss, the recent fire incident at Akilapa Market was both unfortunate and devastating, as it affected the livelihoods of hardworking traders. He reiterated that government at the grassroots remains committed to the welfare and protection of its citizens, particularly in times of distress.
“As a responsive and compassionate administration, we cannot fold our arms while our people suffer. This token of ₦100,000 each for the ten affected victims is to provide immediate relief and assist them in restarting their businesses,” he stated.
He further urged traders and residents to strictly adhere to safety guidelines to prevent future occurrences, while assuring them of continuous collaboration with relevant emergency agencies.
In his acceptance remarks, the Vice Chairman of the Local Government, who also doubles as Chairman of the newly inaugurated committee, Alhaji Ganiyu Abiodun Omotosho, expressed appreciation to the Executive Chairman for finding him and his members worthy of the responsibility. He assured that the committee is fully prepared to carry out its assigned duties diligently and sought the cooperation of residents in making the committee’s mission a success.
Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Head of Local Government Administration (HLGA), Mrs Lara Ladepo, highlighted the significance of establishing the LEMC at the grassroots level. She noted that the committee would play a vital role in mitigating and strengthening preventive measures against unforeseen natural and man-made disasters within the Local Government.
In his goodwill message, an officer of the Oyo State Fire Service, Engr. Yinka Olaojo, commended the Executive Chairman for his timely intervention and support, describing the gesture as a demonstration of compassionate and responsive leadership. He urged residents to promptly call the STATE EMERGENCY HOT LINE 615 or Fire service Direct line (08067429223 or 08054353501) in case of any fire outbreak for immediate response.
The 16-member Local Emergency Management Committee(LEMC)is chaired by the Vice Chairman of the Local Government.
