GOVERNOR SEYI MAKINDE’S VISION IN PROGRESS

Before the 2019 general election—particularly in 2018—His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, was widely underestimated. Many critics dismissed him as politically inexperienced, a technocrat without the capacity to govern Oyo State. These assumptions, however, underestimated not just the man, but his vision, discipline, and commitment to purposeful leadership.
Rather than succumb to cynicism, Governor Makinde chose a people-centred and evidence-based path. His administration was anchored on a clearly articulated development blueprint—Accelerated Development 2019–2023 (Omituntun 1.0)—crafted with the support of a dedicated Think Tank Team. The document reflected the genuine aspirations of the people of Oyo State, prioritising infrastructure, economic expansion, and inclusive governance. It earned public confidence and translated into electoral victory.
Building on the measurable successes of Omituntun 1.0, the Governor returned to the people with Omituntun 2.0 (2023–2027), a sustainable development agenda that deepened social impact and reaffirmed a people-first philosophy. The renewed mandate was a direct response to trust earned through performance.
One of the most strategic and community-impacting initiatives under this vision is the transformation of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan. The Governor adopted a pragmatic, phased approach—first repositioning the airport for efficient local operations, while systematically engaging regulatory authorities, including FAAN and the Federal Government, for expansion approvals.
Today, the upgraded airport is operational and functional, serving as a catalyst for economic activity across host communities. More importantly, it is firmly on course for international commissioning by 2026.
When fully international, the Ibadan Airport will directly connect Oyo State to Europe, Asia, and other global destinations. The ripple effects for our communities are significant:
Increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR)
Job creation across aviation, hospitality, logistics, and commerce
Reduced congestion at Lagos and Ogun airports
Enhanced trade, tourism, and investor confidence
From a community relations standpoint, this project represents more than infrastructure, it is about shared prosperity, economic inclusion, and regional balance. Communities around the airport and across the state stand to benefit from expanded opportunities and improved livelihoods.
Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership journey remains instructive. From underestimation to undeniable impact, from vision to legacy. His name is firmly etched in the developmental history of Oyo State, not just as a governor, but as a leader who listens, plans, and delivers.
