A 300-level student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Muslimat Ifedolapo Alade, has called on students to embrace healthy eating habits and reduce their intake of junk food.

She made this passionate appeal during the flag-off of her campus-based project titled “Healthy Food for All,” held on the university campus.

Alade, a student of Nutrition and Dietetics, expressed concern over the increasing consumption of junk food among students, describing it as a growing trend that poses serious health risks. She shared that her advocacy was inspired by the unhealthy eating habits of her friend, which she believed were not ideal for young people striving for academic excellence.

According to her, “Many students rely heavily on snacks, caffeine, and sugary beverages, especially during exams. But these habits are harmful in the long run. There are healthier alternatives fruits and nutrient-rich meals that can keep one energized and alert for study without negative side effects.”

She emphasized that consuming a balanced diet not only boosts brain function but also enhances physical well-being and overall beauty. Her project, she noted, aligns with Goal 2 and Goal 3 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — Zero Hunger and Good Health and Well-being.

In line with the initiative, Alade and her team distributed food items to selected students on campus and around the host community as part of efforts to support those with limited access to proper meals.

Speaking on funding challenges, she admitted that sourcing sponsorship has not been easy. However, she expressed gratitude to her family and friends for their financial and moral support, which enabled her to launch the project.

“This initiative is ongoing, and we welcome support from well-meaning individuals and organizations who believe in promoting youth health and wellness,” she added.
