As our father, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, Olubadan of Ibadanland, marks his 90th birthday on July 5, 2025, I join the sons and daughters of Ibadanland in extending my congratulations and reverence to a monarch of grace, character and integrity.

On a personal note, my connection to His Imperial Majesty is layered with history and destiny. He was a close friend and contemporary of my late father, Chief Adediran Alabi, who sadly passed away in 2019. I recall fondly how, during their vibrant days, my father would jokingly tell Kabiyesi — then the Jagun Olubadan — that he would never prostrate before him, even if he became the Olubadan.

Life, in its mystery, has a way of turning jest into legacy. While my father did not live to witness his dear friend ascend the throne, I am privileged to do so — not just as a son, but as the Jagun Olubadan myself, installed during the reign of this great monarch. It is a full-circle moment for our family, and one I hold with deep gratitude.

Kabiyesi’s path has not only been that of traditional nobility but also of democratic service. Like me, he once served as a member of the House of Representatives — an honourable calling that speaks to his lifetime of public service, which includes a career in the military. And even now, as Olubadan, he continues to lead with the calm dignity of a statesman and affectionate firmness.
That he hails from Ona-Ara Local Government — my own federal constituency — further binds us in purpose and identity. Kabiyesi represents the very best of us: a man of the people, for the people, and with the people.
As he turns 90 and celebrates his first anniversary as the Olubadan of Ibadanland, I pray for continued strength, robust health, and divine wisdom for His Imperial Majesty.
May his reign be long, peaceful, and filled with the prosperity that Ibadanland so richly deserves.
Kabiyesi, ki ade pe l’ori, ki bata pe l’ese. Long live the Olubadan! Long live Ibadanland!
Hon. Akin Alabi
Jagun Olubadan of Ibadanland
Chairman, House of Representatives Commitee on Works.
