JOINT PRESS RELEASE BY OYO, OKE OGUN & IBADAN ZONES OF FOSSU

Dated: July 1st, 2025
To: The Director, DSS, Aleshinloye, Ibadan

RE: UNCONSTITUTIONAL CONDUCT & PEACE BREACH BY FOSSU NATIONAL SENATE

We, the Presidents and Senators of Oyo, Oke Ogun, and Ibadan zones under the Federation of Oyo State Students Union (FOSSU), jointly issue this press release to express our collective stance on recent unconstitutional actions and breach of peace by the FOSSU National Senate.

BACKGROUND & KEY ISSUES

1. Violation of DSS-mediated Peace Accord:
On June 19, 2025, at Aleshinloye, Ibadan, a peace meeting was held and mediated by the DSS, where an agreement was reached that a broad stakeholders’ meeting would be held at a mutually agreed time. Shockingly, the Senate President and Clerk disregarded this by unilaterally convening the meeting without the consent of the remaining signatories — the Presidents of Oyo and Oke Ogun zones and the Senate Deputy Clerk — who had legitimate academic excuses.

2. Unconstitutional Dissolution of Executive Council:
The FOSSU Senate unlawfully dissolved the Central Executive Council in violation of Article 7, Section 2(ii) of the union’s constitution, without first constituting a Judicial Council. This has led to a leadership vacuum and governance crisis.

3. Improper Formation of Electoral Committee:
The Senate bypassed Article 9, Section 1(2) of the FOSSU Constitution in constituting the electoral committee, casting serious doubt on the legitimacy of the forthcoming electoral process.

4. Disregard for Stakeholders’ Input:
Efforts toward peace and reconciliation have been repeatedly ignored, undermining representation and unity within the union.

OUR JOINT RESOLUTIONS

In response, we hereby resolve the following:

1. Suspension of All Campaign Activities:
All aspirants from the Oyo, Oke Ogun, and Ibadan zones are hereby directed to suspend all campaign activities and electioneering until a peaceful resolution is achieved.

2. Stakeholders’ Meeting:
We call on the outgoing FOSSU National President, Sen Ààre Alarape Ibrahim, in collaboration with Hon. Victor Olojede Dideoluwa (SSA to the Governor on Student Affairs), to convene an all-inclusive stakeholders’ meeting across all five zones, prioritizing the involvement of Oyo, Oke Ogun, and Ibadan zones.

3. Campaign Ban on National Platforms:
No aspirant should post campaign materials or promotions on any national platforms tied to the affected zones. Any violation will be deemed a betrayal and attract severe disciplinary action.

4. Commitment to Unity & Due Process:
We reaffirm our loyalty to FOSSU National and declare that no national convention or election shall be recognized without proper, inclusive, and peaceful resolutions among all stakeholders.
