A group of passionate sports enthusiasts and lovers has called on the Oyo State Government, led by Governor Seyi Makinde, to intensify efforts toward the development of school sports across the state’s primary and secondary institutions.

In a statement issued after observing the recent basketball competition in Ibadan, the group commended Governor Makinde for his laudable achievements in the education sector, particularly his administration’s free education policy and the ongoing recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff across schools in the state.

The group described these initiatives as a solid foundation for academic excellence, but stressed the need to complement them with equal investment in school sports, which they termed “an essential pillar for holistic child development.”

“We deeply appreciate the governor’s unwavering commitment to accessible and quality education in Oyo State. However, we urge the state government to channel more attention and funding toward school sports development, which has been largely underfunded,” the statement read.

The group advocated for the revival and regular sponsorship of inter-school sports competitions at various levels including local, zonal, and national stages as well as participation in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)-driven events such as the Milo Basketball Championship and other similar platforms.

They emphasized the importance of government-funded training programs, sports kits, and travel logistics for participating schools and students, noting that such support will not only unearth talents but also promote teamwork, discipline, and physical well-being among young learners.

“Many great athletes in Nigeria started their journey from grassroots and school competitions. By investing in school sports, Oyo State can position itself as a breeding ground for national and international champions,” the group added.

They also commended corporate bodies for their involvements, however appealed for more partnership with the state government through financial sponsorships, school-endowed sports programs, and infrastructural development, in line with their corporate social responsibility objectives.

The group concluded by expressing hope that Governor Makinde, known for his progressive policies, would respond positively to the call and integrate school sports into the broader agenda for youth development and education reform in Oyo State.
