The Archbishop of Ibadan Diocese, Most Reverend Olugbenga Fafeyiwa, has called for urgent action to address the high unemployment rate among the youth in Nigeria, warning that a nation that neglects its youth is a nation heading for disaster. His remarks were made during the 63rd Synod Ceremony of the Methodist Church Nigeria held in Ibadan, where he also underscored the critical need for good leadership and governance to ensure the country’s progress.
Fafeyiwa’s speech came amidst rising concerns about Nigeria’s economic challenges, including high inflation, lack of basic amenities, and escalating insecurity. The Archbishop lamented the absence of essential services such as reliable electricity, roads, and affordable education, particularly for the children of the common man. He highlighted the importance of investing in these areas as foundational to the nation’s development and the well-being of its citizens.
In his address, Fafeyiwa emphasized the profound impact of unemployment on the nation’s youth, urging both government and society to prioritize their empowerment. “A nation that neglects its youths is on a path to doom,” he said, stressing that the country’s future depends on the successful integration and upliftment of its young population.
The Archbishop also acknowledged the positive strides made by Governor Seyi Makinde in the areas of infrastructure and governance within Oyo State, commending his efforts in bringing development to the state. However, he urged the governor to extend his reach to other parts of the state, ensuring that all regions benefit from the progress.
Furthermore, Fafeyiwa called for a collective effort to address Nigeria’s growing insecurity, rising costs of living, and widespread corruption. He urged Nigerians to unite in tackling the challenges of ethnic divisions, fuel price hikes, and insurgency. He pointed out that overcoming these issues requires not only leadership from the government but also active participation from all citizens.
“The challenges we face as a nation, from insecurity to economic hardship, demand that we come together, regardless of our differences, to work for a better future,” Fafeyiwa stated, urging for collaboration to restore peace, justice, and prosperity in the country.
In his address, the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, echoed Fafeyiwa’s concerns about the country’s state, particularly highlighting the nation’s urgent need for divine intervention in the face of severe economic and security challenges. Dr. Aba stressed the importance of prayer, urging Nigerians to seek God’s guidance and provision to overcome these difficulties.
Together, the religious leaders called on the nation to reflect on its current struggles and work towards a future of unity, stability, and prosperity.
