The Yoruba Nation Youths, both at home and abroad, have issued a stern warning against the implementation of Sharia law or courts within the Yoruba region, particularly in the South-West zone of Nigeria.

Leading figures like Prophet Ayodele Ologunlouwa and Comrade Oyegunle Oluwamayowa Omotoyole expressed deep concerns about the potential consequences of such a move. They cited Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s famous dictum, “kàkà ká dọbale fún gambari ká kúkú roju kú” (it is better for a Yoruba man to take courage and die rather than prostrate for a Hausa-Fulani ethnicity because we are Yoruba and must be free), emphasizing the importance of Yoruba autonomy and self-determination.

The youths highlighted several potential negative impacts of Sharia law on Yorubaland:
* Erosion of Cultural Identity: Sharia law may erode Yoruba cultural values and traditions, conflicting with deeply ingrained customs and beliefs.
* Restrictions on Personal Freedoms: The strict rules and punishments associated with Sharia law could severely limit the personal freedoms of Yoruba people, particularly women and minorities.
* Injustice and Discrimination: Concerns exist that Sharia law may lead to biased treatment of women, non-Muslims, and other vulnerable groups.
* Conflict with Existing Laws: The implementation of Sharia law could create conflicts with existing laws and regulations within Yorubaland.
* Economic Consequences: Sharia law may deter foreign investment, tourism, and business opportunities, negatively impacting the region’s economy.
* Social Unrest and Conflict: The imposition of Sharia law could exacerbate existing tensions between Muslim and non-Muslim communities, potentially leading to increased social unrest and conflict.
* Limitations on Education and Innovation: Sharia law may restrict the scope of education and innovation in Yorubaland, particularly in areas like science, technology, and art.
* Negative Impact on Women’s Rights: Sharia law has been criticized for its treatment of women, potentially limiting their rights and empowerment within Yorubaland.
* Restrictions on Freedom of Speech and Expression: Sharia law may restrict freedom of speech and expression, particularly if it is perceived as critical of Islam or Islamic authorities.
* Loss of Autonomy and Self-Determination: The introduction of Sharia law could undermine the authority of traditional Yoruba institutions and erode the region’s autonomy and self-determination.
* Increased Tension between Muslims and Non-Muslims: Sharia law could exacerbate existing tensions between Muslim and non-Muslim communities.
* Negative Impact on Traditional Institutions: Sharia law may undermine the authority and influence of traditional institutions in Yorubaland, such as monarchies and councils of elders.
* Limitations on Artistic and Cultural Expression: Sharia law may restrict artistic and cultural expression in Yorubaland, particularly if it is perceived as being at odds with Islamic values and principles.
* Negative Impact on Tourism: The introduction of Sharia law could deter tourists, negatively impacting the tourism industry within Yorubaland.
* Loss of Global Connectivity: Sharia law may limit global connectivity and exchange, potentially isolating Yorubaland from the rest of the world.

The youths strongly condemned the proposed inauguration of a Sharia Court in Oyo town on January 11, 2025, describing it as a “laughing stock” and vowing to resist its implementation with all their might. They called upon Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, other South-West governors, Yoruba monarchs, senators, and local government officials to unite and resist the introduction of Sharia law in Yorubaland.

The Yoruba National Youths reiterated their unwavering commitment to defending their land and fighting for Yoruba Nation autonomy and self-determination. They declared that “no force in hell or on earth can stop the rise and establishment of the sovereign state which will one day be carved out of what is presently known as Nigeria.”
