A prominent chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State, Abayomi Fagbenro-Bibire, has commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his visionary leadership in launching the first phase of the 11MW Independent Power Project (IPP) in the state.
Fagbenro-Bibire, a key political figure from Ibadan South-West and the founder of the Bibire People’s Vision Association (BPVA) and Hope Also Needs Help Foundation (HANHF), expressed strong support for the project, which is set to revolutionize energy access and boost socio-economic development in the state.
Governor Seyi Makinde recently commissioned the first phase of the Hybrid Power Project, which combines a 10MW gas-fired power generation plant with a 1MW photovoltaic (PV) solar solution. The project aims to provide reliable electricity to critical state facilities, including government offices, healthcare centers, schools, and economic hubs. By improving power supply to these essential services, the project is expected to enhance the efficiency of public administration, healthcare delivery, and educational services, while stimulating economic growth.
Fagbenro-Bibire, who has long advocated for sustainable development in the state, praised the governor for his forward-thinking approach, particularly in addressing power challenges that have long hindered the growth of key sectors. He emphasized that the initiative would not only ensure stable electricity for vital institutions but also improve the quality of life for residents, especially through the provision of lighting under the ‘Light-Up Oyo’ initiative.
“The commissioning of this power project is a monumental step in the right direction for Oyo State. Governor Makinde’s commitment to transforming the state’s energy sector and improving the welfare of its citizens cannot be overemphasized,” said Fagbenro-Bibire.
“The IPP will be instrumental in powering 12 healthcare facilities, including the Adeoyo Maternity Teaching Hospital and the State Hospital Ring Road. This is a vital boost for the health sector, as reliable electricity is crucial for the efficient functioning of hospitals and other health services.”
The project also promises to illuminate a 10km radius within the state capital, Ibadan, under the ‘Light-Up Oyo’ initiative, which will contribute significantly to enhanced security and foster an environment conducive to economic development, particularly for businesses operating at night.
The 11MW power project is being executed on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis, with Elektron Energy financing and developing the initiative. It is a public-private partnership designed to provide sustainable power solutions for the state, with the potential to expand further in subsequent phases.
