Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cyber Security, has called for a unified African payment system to streamline cross-border transactions and bolster the continent’s digital economy.
The Senator representing Ogun Central speaking at the 13th African Internet Governance Forum in Addis Ababa, Senator Salisu emphasized the pivotal role of seamless payments in realizing the full potential of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).
“Let’s make payments as easy as data flows across borders,” he stated.
The Senator also underscored the importance of free movement for Africans, advocating for technological integration to facilitate mobility for all citizens, not just those with diplomatic passports.
Highlighting Nigeria’s strides in digital governance, Senator Salisu noted the country’s enactment of the Data Protection and Privacy Act, the establishment of a dedicated commission for its implementation, and the amendment of the Cybersecurity Act to safeguard national information infrastructure.
“Nigeria is committed to strengthening its cybersecurity laws and aligning with international protocols and UN standards,” he affirmed.
“Let’s build a multi-stakeholder digital future for Africa!” Senator Salisu’s call for a unified African payment system has garnered significant attention as it aligns with the broader goals of the AfCFTA to create a single African market.
Experts believe that such a system could significantly reduce transaction costs, stimulate trade, and promote economic growth across the continent.
