In a move that could potentially reshape the traditional hierarchy of Ibadan, ancient warlord families are seeking inclusion in the Olubadan Coronation Committee. This development comes as the city prepares for the coronation of a new Olubadan, the paramount ruler of Ibadanland. The warlord families commend Governor Seyi Makinde for his input in the state and impact in Ìbàdànland.
The warlord families, descendants of the city’s founding fathers, have long played a significant role in Ibadan’s history and development. However, they feel marginalized in the current coronation process, which they believe neglects their ancestral contributions.
Leader of the warlord families, Chief Adewale Ibikunle recently gathered to press their demand for representation on the coronation committee. They argue that their exclusion undermines their cultural heritage and diminishes their role in Ibadan’s rich history.
“We are not seeking to disrupt the coronation process, but rather to honour our ancestors and acknowledge our families’ sacrifices in building Ibadan,” said the president of AAIWF through PRO of the warlord families. “Our inclusion will enrich the coronation committee and ensure a more inclusive and representative celebration.”
The Olubadan-in-Council has yet to respond to the warlord families’ request, but sources suggest a possible review of the coronation committee’s composition. If successful, this move could lead to a more diverse and representative coronation process, acknowledging the contributions of all Ibadan’s founding families.
The esteemed warlord families of Ibadan, extend their sincere appreciation to Governor Seyi Makinde and the Oyo State Local Government for their tireless efforts in completing the Olubadan office in Yemetu. This historic project, dormant for many years, has finally been revived and brought to completion, much to the delight of the families and the entire Ibadan community.
