The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged the state government to renovate and upgrade Cultural Center, Mokola hilltop, Ibadan to modern cinema standard.

The House made the call while reacting to a motion moved by the member representing Ibadan North 2 constituency, Honourable Gabriel Babajide during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin.

Honourable Gabriel Babajide, while presenting the motion said the centre was long over due for renovation.

” The Government needs to look deeper and work towards generating more Internally Generated Revenue from the Culture and Tourism sector. ” He stated.

He added that in the past, the Centre has served as a medium to showcase the cultural heritage of the Pace Setter State, leading among its equals then before it became moribund.

“when some of us were growing up,  the Centre served as a tourist and adventure spot for citizens and foreigners. The Centre was a beehive of activities and a lot was generated in terms of revenue ” Hon. Adebayo added.

He argued that  it would serve it purpose of being an international tourist attraction, and add to the internally generated revenue of Oyo State if upgraded to modern cinema standard.

The Speaker and other lawmakers commended Honourable Babajide, throwing their support behind the call for the renovation and upgrade of Cultural Center, built in 1977 on one of the seven hills that make up Ibadan land.

The House has however adjourned its plenary sitting till Tuesday, 27th February,  2024.
