I am disappointed, but not surprised, by Ismael Taiwo’s misinformed article about Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja’s coronation. It’s clear that Taiwo lacks understanding of Ibadan’s history and traditions. Let me set the record straight.
Oba Ladoja’s coronation as Oba Oju Opo is a testament to his dedication to Ibadan’s heritage, not a betrayal of his principles. He has always prioritized the preservation of our traditions, even when faced with opposition. Taiwo’s claim that Oba Ladoja “went back to his vomit” is a gross misrepresentation.
The circumstances surrounding the reviewed Chieftaincy Declaration Law in 2017 were different from today. Oba Ladoja’s initial opposition was rooted in concerns about the implementation, not the concept itself. In fact, Oba Ladoja’s coronation is a validation of the corrections made to the chieftaincy title system.
Notably, it was Late Governor Ajimobi who crowned Obas seven years ago, not the Olubadan. In contrast, Oba Owolabi Olakuleyin, the current Olubadan, has now crowned Oba Ladoja as Oju Opo lineage crown, solidifying his position within the traditional hierarchy.
Taiwo’s assertion that Late Governor Ajimobi was vindicated is laughable. Ajimobi’s decisions were often divisive and disregarded Ibadan’s traditions. His legacy is complex, and we must approach it with nuance.
Ibadan’s history is rich and complex, spanning centuries. We must approach it with respect and understanding, rather than cherry-picking facts to suit our narratives. Oba Ladoja’s coronation is a celebration of our heritage, not a political ploy.
In conclusion, I urge Taiwo and others to educate themselves on Ibadan’s history before making sweeping statements. We must prioritize understanding and preservation of our traditions, rather than perpetuating misconceptions.
