As the search for Benedict Akika, a renowned philanthropist based in Ibadan, enters another week intensifies, his supporters across the state and members of Omituntun Benedict Foundation in Ibadan have turned to God through prayers in a bid to aid rescue efforts.
Supporters of the businessman, politician and philanthropist converged across different worship centers including churches and mosques at different local government areas in Ibadan on Sunday, September 8 to offer special prayers for his immediate release and safe return.
The Oyo state Police, while confirming Akika’s abduction last week, assured that efforts are already in full swing to ensure his release and safe return to his family.
Akika, who has been widely celebrated and decorated with various chieftaincy titles and awards for his extensive philanthropic works in community development and charitable causes, was abducted by unknown assailants last week.
Akika’s abduction immediately sent shockwaves through the state especially among his ardent followers, where Akika is known for his substantial contributions to education for less privileged, health, and poverty alleviation initiatives.
Akika, being a popular ally of the executive governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde and also a stalwart of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo state is a respected figure across the state due to his aggressive charitable cause.
Due to the increasing anticipation and uncertainty surrounding the case, a growing number of Akika’s supporters have sought spiritual intervention through special prayers and supplications to God.
Religious leaders and community members have also organized series of prayer sessions, and special interfaith services, hoping to invoke divine assistance in the search efforts.
These gatherings, often attended by hundreds, feature prayers for Akika’s safe return and for the strength and wisdom of the security teams involved.
“While we remain hopeful and patient, we believe that spiritual support through special prayers to God is crucial during this challenging time,” one of Akika’s supporter who doesn’t want name in print due to the sensitivity of the case said.
Another supporter who shared the mood among Akika’s political group (OBF) said, “Our faith guides us to believe that through collective prayer and devotion, we can contribute positively to this rescue operation.”
