The embattled Speaker of Lagos, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, arrived in the state 12 days after his controversial removal as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. While addressing the press at his GRA residence, Obasa denied the allegations leveled against him, specifically questioning the plausibility of constructing a gate with ₦16 billion. He wondered if the gate in question was akin to the Wall of Jericho or the wall separating America from Mexico.
Amidst other issues currently stirring controversy related to the January 13 removal from office, the Speaker highlighted flaws in the process, clarifying that he was never impeached. He stated that he could only be removed as Speaker, not impeached, and even then, it had to be done in accordance with due process.
Responding to questions from the press, Obasa asserted that he was still the Speaker and emphasized that if members of the Assembly no longer wanted him, they would have to do so in accordance with the constitution.
Obasa argued that when Hon. Waheed Jokotola Pelumi and Hon. Funmi Tejuosho were removed, they were both present in the House. He also criticized the procedure adopted in his removal as illegal, citing the breaking into the chamber and the use of a fake mace as acts of desperation and misconduct.
Obasa clarified that he held no grievances against anyone but insisted that until he is legally removed, he remains the Speaker of the Assembly.
