As the world marks World Youth Skills Day 2025, the Oyo State chapter of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) joins millions globally to celebrate the significance of equipping young people with skills that foster employment, innovation, and sustainable development.
This year’s theme, “Youth Empowerment Through AI and Digital Skills,” underscores the urgent need to prepare the Nigerian youth for a technology-driven future. In a commemorative message, Ambassador Abdulsalam Abdulquadri Olusegun FEIP, Chairman of NYCN Oyo State, emphasized the critical role of digital literacy and skills development in building a prosperous and inclusive society.
“With a majority of Nigeria’s population under the age of 25, we have a youthful workforce brimming with potential. However, without the right skills, this demographic advantage could become a missed opportunity,” he stated.
Key Focus Areas
Amb. Abdulquadri highlighted three strategic areas essential for youth empowerment in the digital age:
Digital Literacy: Youth must be equipped with basic and advanced digital competencies to stay relevant in today’s evolving job market.
Vocational Training: Programs in tech-related fields such as coding, digital marketing, and graphic design should be widely promoted.
Entrepreneurship: Fostering entrepreneurial mindsets through training in business planning, innovation, and digital enterprise is critical.
Call to Action
The NYCN Oyo Chairman also called for a coordinated multi-sectoral approach to youth skills development, urging:
Government and institutions to invest in quality and accessible skill acquisition programs.
Private sector stakeholders to promote mentorship and internship initiatives.
Community leaders and NGOs to support youth participation in skills competitions, career fairs, and innovation hubs.
“Today is not just a celebration—it is a wake-up call,” he added. “We must unite to ensure that the next generation is not only prepared for the future of work but equipped to shape it.”
Ambassador Abdulquadri concluded by wishing all Nigerian youths a productive World Youth Skills Day 2025, encouraging them to embrace lifelong learning and innovation.
