In a thrilling display of talent and teamwork, the girls’ basketball team from Onireke High School clinched victory for Oyo State at the 25th Milo School Basketball Championship Western Conference, held from May 28 to June 4, 2025. This is coming after weeks of being the champion of Ilaji School Basketball Competition 2025.

The championship reached its climax on Tuesday, June 3, at the indoor arena of the Lekan Salami Stadium, where the Oyo State girls’ team, led by stars from Onireke High School, secured a hard-fought win over their Osun counterparts with a final score of 44 to 41.

The Onireke team, having emerged as champions in Oyo State earlier this year, formed the core of the state’s contingent for the Western Conference tournament. Their spirited performance earned them the right to represent Oyo State at the upcoming National Milo School Basketball Championship.

Speaking after the final match, the school’s sports master, Mr. Stephen Ajiboye, expressed gratitude to Milo for its continuous support of grassroots basketball. He also extended appreciation to the Oyo State Government and the management of Onireke High School, particularly the principal, for their unwavering support of the team.

“This victory is not just for our school, but for the entire Oyo State,” Mr. Ajiboye said. “We’re proud of our girls and look forward to making the state proud again at the national level.”

The national finals are expected to bring together the best school teams from across Nigeria, where Onireke High School will carry the hopes of Oyo State.

However, speculators have urged the support of compassionate Governor Makinde’s led administration through the Ministry of Education and Youth & Sports for the government school and girls who have always been champion despite low morale.
