The recent send-off ceremony for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage in Oyo State has reignited a significant conversation, one that has quietly persisted since 2019 when Engineer Seyi Makinde, a Christian, assumed office as Governor. While his consistent support for the Muslim community is laudable, it also prompts a pressing question: where do Christian leaders and pilgrims stand in the governor’s welfare and sponsorship priorities?
At the Hajj Camp in Olodo, the Chairman of the Oyo State Pilgrims Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), Sheik Wahab Ateere, publicly commended Governor Makinde for personally sponsoring 18 pilgrims to Mecca this year, a gesture he has reportedly made annually since taking office. This commendation is well deserved.
Yet, for many within the Christian community, this moment also highlights a notable silence. Where is the comparable support for Christian pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Jordan, and other sacred destinations? Why have Christian leaders especially youths received little visible encouragement or support to undertake such spiritually transformative journeys?
As a Christian-led administration, there is a growing sentiment among Christian constituents that their spiritual development is being overlooked. While Governor Makinde is widely respected for his inclusive leadership and developmental achievements, inclusivity must also extend to religious representation—especially in matters of moral and spiritual empowerment.
Equity in pilgrimage sponsorship is not about competition; it is about fairness. Christian organizations, youth groups, and deserving individuals also seek meaningful faith experiences. They, too, deserve the governor’s recognition and tangible support.
This is, therefore, a respectful call to Governor Makinde: let Christian pilgrimages receive the same attention, dignity, and investment as their Muslim counterparts. True inclusivity means all faiths feel seen, heard, and valued.
