In a landmark decision taken during Thursday’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri to Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri.
This announcement, made on July 17, 2025, serves as a tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, recognizing his unwavering moral principles and leadership legacy, particularly in Northern Nigeria.
President Tinubu emphasized Buhari’s role as a symbol of integrity and discipline in Nigerian politics. He noted that Buhari’s contributions—especially his efforts in restoring stability in the North-East—would not be forgotten.
“President Buhari carried with him an image of moral uprightness and dedication to Nigeria. Honouring him in this way ensures future generations will remember his service,” Tinubu said during the session.
The renaming was part of a special FEC gathering, which also featured prayers and moments of reflection on the former president’s influence in governance and public life.
Although the decision has been made by the executive, it is expected to undergo the necessary administrative and legislative steps before becoming fully official.
This marks the second major federal university renamed under Tinubu’s administration. Previously, the University of Abuja was renamed to Yakubu Gowon University to celebrate the former Head of State on his 90th birthday.
