HAMZAT’S 100-POINT MANIFESTO: SEVEN YEARS IN GOVERNMENT, WHY ARE THESE PROMISES ONLY NOW BECOMING A PRIORITY?

The Laja Adeoye Campaign Organisation (LACO) has taken note of the unveiling of the 100-point manifesto by the Lagos State APC governorship candidate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, tagged The Lagos Promise.

While manifestos are important instruments of political accountability, Lagosians deserve more than another collection of promises. They deserve explanations, measurable results and accountability for years already spent in government.

Dr. Hamzat is not a political newcomer seeking an opportunity to understand the workings of government. He has served as Deputy Governor of Lagos State since 2019 and previously held commissioner positions under earlier administrations.

This raises a fundamental question: After years of occupying strategic positions in the Lagos State Government, why are so many of the issues now presented as campaign priorities still awaiting attention?

Why are affordable housing, improved healthcare, efficient transportation, employment opportunities, better waste management and improved security still being presented as major promises for the future?

If these are achievable priorities, Lagosians deserve to know what prevented their comprehensive delivery during his years in government.

The introduction of a 100-point manifesto, including a promise to establish a performance monitoring mechanism, also raises questions about the accountability systems that have operated under the government in which he has served.

Is the problem a shortage of policies, or the gap between policy announcements and actual delivery?

LACO believes that political leadership must be assessed not merely by the number of promises contained in campaign documents but by the extent to which those entrusted with public responsibility have addressed the everyday challenges of the people.

Lagosians are entitled to ask for a comprehensive account of the years already spent in government before being asked to embrace another set of promises.

A manifesto should be a commitment to deliver, not an opportunity to postpone accountability.

The people of Lagos deserve answers about yesterday, results today and a credible plan for tomorrow.
