The Oyo State Government, under the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde, has approved the commencement of online registration for the 2025/2026 General Bursary Awards for final-year students of Oyo State origin in public higher institutions across Nigeria.
The Secretary of the Oyo State Scholarship Board, Mr. Niyi Akinyanju, disclosed this on Monday, October 5, 2026, while speaking with newsmen in his office. He said the approval was part of the state government’s continued efforts to provide financial assistance to students and ease the burden associated with completing their academic programmes.

Akinyanju also announced a major expansion of the bursary scheme, explaining that final-year students of Colleges of Education would now be eligible to benefit from the General Bursary Awards. According to him, the category had previously been excluded from the scheme since its inception but has now been formally incorporated into the state’s student-support programme.

He said the expansion would bring more students across different categories of public higher institutions under the bursary scheme, particularly at a time when final-year students face additional academic and financial obligations. The intervention, he added, is intended to provide eligible beneficiaries with financial support as they complete their programmes.

The Scholarship Board is expected to announce details of the online registration process, eligibility criteria, required documents and commencement date through official channels. Prospective beneficiaries have consequently been advised to rely only on authorised communications from the Oyo State Government and the Oyo State Scholarship Board.
The latest approval adds to the state government’s recent educational interventions targeted at students of Oyo State origin. Earlier in the year, the government approved a payment of N500,000 to each Oyo State indigene studying at the Nigerian Law School, an intervention the government described as the highest of its kind among South-West states.
