The African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Olooye Adegboyega Toafeek Adegoke FCA, who is also Aare Egbe Omo Balogun of Ibadanland, has paid glowing tribute to the heroes and heroines whose sacrifices laid the foundation for Nigeria’s democratic journey, urging citizens to remain steadfast, law-abiding, and hopeful for a better future.
In a Democracy Day message commemorating June 12, Adegoke reflected on the significance of the historic date, describing it as a symbol of courage, resilience, and the collective struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria.
He particularly remembered the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, widely regarded as the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, whose sacrifice and commitment to democratic ideals continue to inspire generations of Nigerians.
Adegoke also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of numerous heroes and heroines across the country and in Oyo State who fought tirelessly to ensure that democracy thrives in Nigeria.
“June 12 serves as a reminder that the freedoms and democratic rights we enjoy today came at a great cost. We must honour the sacrifices of those who stood firm for justice, fairness, and the people’s mandate,” he stated.
The ADC governorship hopeful urged Nigerians, particularly residents of Oyo State, to remain law-abiding and continue to support efforts aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, noting that the sacrifices of the nation’s democratic icons must not be allowed to go in vain.
He offered prayers for Nigeria’s current leaders at all levels, seeking divine wisdom, strength, and guidance for them in the discharge of their responsibilities to the people.
Adegoke also used the occasion to admonish fellow politicians to embrace good character, integrity, and positive antecedents in their political engagements, stressing that leadership should be anchored on service, accountability, and the welfare of the people.
The Ibadan-born philanthropist again expressed deep concern over the insecurity challenges facing parts of the country, especially the abduction of teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State who remain in captivity.
He remembered the victims in his prayers and called for their immediate and safe rescue, alongside all other Nigerians currently held by kidnappers across the country.
“We must not forget our teachers, pupils, and every innocent citizen still in the hands of abductors. Our prayers are with them and their families, and we remain hopeful for their safe return,” he said.
Adegoke appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and security conscious, encouraging communities to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and useful information that could help curb criminal activities.
Despite the nation’s challenges, he assured residents that there is hope for a better Oyo State and a greater Nigeria, urging everyone to remain united and committed to building a society founded on peace, justice, development, and democratic values.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us renew our commitment to the ideals of democracy and continue to work together for the progress of our dear state and nation. Better days lie ahead for Oyo State and Nigeria,” Adegoke concluded.
