Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Ibadan, has concluded its 64th Annual Synod with strong calls for improved security, economic relief, youth empowerment, and responsible leadership at all levels of government.
The four-day Synod was held from Thursday, April 16 to Sunday, April 19, 2026, at Methodist Church Nigeria, Trinity, Onireke, Ibadan, under the theme: “I Will Fight for You” drawn from Exodus 14:14.
The Synod was hosted by the Trinity Circuit and presided over by His Grace, Most Rev. Dr. Olugbenga Caleb Fafeyiwa, Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Ibadan and Bishop of Ibadan Diocese, while the Lay Session was chaired by the Diocesan Lay President, Sis. Olasumbo Adeola Anifowose.
The official opening ceremony was held on Friday, April 17, with Prof. Olu Lasekan serving as Chief Guest of Honour and declaring the Synod open. Other dignitaries in attendance included Dr. (Mrs.) Bisola Sogbetun and several church leaders.
In his Episcopal Address, Archbishop Fafeyiwa extensively explained the Synod theme, assuring Christians of God’s unwavering commitment to defend His people in difficult times. Various sermons delivered during the Synod also reinforced faith, hope, and dedication to God.
The Synod thanked God for the growth of the Diocese, particularly in worship, prayer, and evangelism, while urging members to deepen their commitment through discipleship, regular attendance, and active service.
It also stressed the need for greater youth involvement and leadership development within the church, encouraging members to live holy lives and renew their devotion to God.
Members were equally encouraged to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of future elections.
The Synod commended Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, for achievements recorded by his administration and prayed for continued success.
It also congratulated the governor and residents of the state on the 50th anniversary of Oyo State, praying for greater peace and development.
However, the church raised concerns over rising cost of living, youth unemployment, and security challenges affecting residents.
The Synod appealed to Governor Makinde to facilitate the tarring and maintenance of the road leading to the Archbishop’s residence at College Crescent, Mafohun, Molete, noting its importance to both the church and surrounding community.
It also called for government intervention regarding street trading and persistent hawking activities along Agbeni-Ogunpa Market Road, where Agbeni Cathedral is located.
On national matters, the Synod urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take decisive action against kidnapping and killings across the country, especially in Northern Nigeria, Benue, and Plateau States.
It noted that insecurity has contributed to food scarcity and loss of lives, while also calling on government to prioritize job creation, healthcare, education, and stronger security measures.
The Synod further demanded transparency, accountability, and integrity in governance, while urging Nigerians to embrace unity, peace, and collective responsibility.
Regarding the new federal tax reforms, the church stated that implementation must be fair and people-centered, adding that taxation should not worsen citizens’ suffering while corruption persists.
The Synod congratulated the Prelate of Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence Dr. Oliver Ali Aba, and the entire Methodist family on the celebration of 50 years of episcopacy in the church, describing it as a reflection of divine faithfulness and guidance.
