LIVE TV RANTING: MAKINDE’S OUTBURST EXPOSES POLITICAL AMNESIA AND DESPERATION
The Return of Adelabu Penkelemes has watched with deep embarrassment and concern as Governor Seyi Makinde descended into an unguarded rant on live television, an outing that betrayed political amnesia, intolerance, and desperation unbecoming of the office he occupies.
Has the Governor forgotten his own political journey? In 2007, Engr. Makinde contested for the Senate under the platform of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP). This is a verifiable fact, regardless of how inconvenient it may be to his present narrative. Attempts to diminish the political stature of Oloye Adebayo Adelabu are therefore futile and self-defeating especially given that Governor Makinde is a clear beneficiary of Adelabu’s political goodwill and financial support prior to his emergence as governor in 2019.
It bears repeating: without the internal crisis that fractured the APC and compelled Adebayo Adelabu to pitch his tent with the Accord Party, would Makinde have clinched victory, let alone secured a second term? In 2023, Adelabu again extended full support to Makinde, alongside the broader political alignment that included the backing of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Ingratitude, when paraded on national television, does not translate to strength it exposes weakness.
The Governor has bitten off more than he can chew. The people of Oyo State, particularly Ibadan, are discerning and will not be misled by revisionism or loud rhetoric. Governance is about stewardship, inclusion, and results, not rants. Policies such as the controversial circular road corridors have, in the view of many residents, disrupted livelihoods and raised serious questions about priorities and consultation.
As 2027 approaches, the Governor may continue to rant, but the electorate will speak. A leader who struggles to manage cohesion within his own party should reconsider lecturing others on political organization. The steady stream of defections from the ruling party underscores growing dissatisfaction with opaque decision-making and alleged imposition.
Mr. Governor, the public deserves answers. What compelled respected party figures such as Senator Hosea Agboola Hallelujah and Agba Egbe to exit? Was it not the heavy hand of imposition and the erosion of internal democracy? Silence will not erase these questions.
Today, the APC stands more united and focused. This unity will surprise those who underestimate it. Ultimately, leadership is measured by humility, gratitude, transparency, and results not televised tirades.
