In what has been described as a watershed moment in Lagos State’s local governance, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has recorded a major political milestone as Hon. Babatunde Dosunmu of Ward D, the lone PDP councillor elected in the just concluded council elections across the state, has emerged as the Speaker of the Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA).
In a unanimous and highly symbolic vote, Hon. Dosunmu defeated his All Progressives Congress (APC) contender, Hon. Shola Thomas, a former PDP councillor who defected to the APC two years ago. The victory is not only historic but also signals a seismic shift in local political dynamics, especially in the APC-dominated Lagos State.
The decision by his colleagues to back Hon. Dosunmu as Speaker despite his minority party status is being hailed as a triumph of integrity, competence, and cross-party trust.
Reacting to the development, PDP Lagos Mainland LGA Chairman Otunba Malomo Adelabi described it as “a new dawn for grassroots leadership in Lagos.” He was joined by PDP Local Government Leader Otunba Folabi Alimi and the Emeritus PDP Chairman of Lagos Mainland LGA, Mr. Ola Alimi, who both praised the courage and leadership qualities of the new Speaker.
